These are the notes that remind me what to tell to new members when they join. I'm not quite sure how to break this down between here and the Membership page - maybe two separate chapters aren't necessary at all - but it's still useful having these notes somewhere.

What you get out of Newspeak House depends on what you put in; it's like a gym for civic engagement, nothing will happen unless you put some work into it. This guide suggests some things you can be doing

Goal of Newspeak House

See "Why does Newspeak House Exist". Activities are steps towards this goal, not valuable in their own right.

The Community Map / Unmailing List

The Community Map (aka The Unmailing List) is a repository of all the relevant mailing lists, facebook groups, slack teams, hashtags, etc that the community knows about.
At the moment it's just on a hackpad and in this gitbook, but the plan is to transition it to a robust, searchable repository with rich metadata. It has around 200 entries now, but in time could easily have tens of thousands.

  • Take a look through it and see if there's anything you can add.
  • If you are ever thinking of starting a new group/list/team, see if there's one already in the list you could start using instead.
  • Sign up to all of these that are in your area of interest. You can always unsubscribe if some of them are overwhelming - but most are quite quiet most of the time.
  • Sign up to a few random ones. You might learn something!
  • If you have something you want to share - a new project, an event - use these mailing lists to get the word out.

The Purpose of the Fellowship

The most valuable interactions you have with Newspeak House should be getting to know the fellows; they're here to facilitate your interaction with the wider network.

You can find their contact details via the website - www.nwspk.com/fellowship - reach out to them to say hello and organise a chat!

Social Graph

Please give us your social data so we can do cool, hopefully useful stuff with it!

Space in Newspeak House

You will get a ring, that when the club space is launched, will grant you access. The rules around use of the club space are yet to be defined, but suspect it will be similar most hotdesking spaces. However, we're not trying to compete with coworking spaces, there are plenty of those - this will be a place primarily for networking and meeting

As for the rest of the building, think of this like you would think of your friends' house; you're welcome but you wouldn't just show up unannounced.

Please don't give your ring to anyone, and tell us if you lose it.

Events

Go to events! Subscribe: calendar subscription

Remember events are just peaks of community activity icebergs, and you can find other ways to get involved by contacting the organisers etc.

You can run events yourself, for free! Big or small.

Ration Club

The only event that isn't about anything - a good way to meet a cross section of the community. Try and come to one at least once every two or three months.
